Commissioners approve YMCA grant request

Clarion County commissioners have approved a $50,000 grant request from the Scenic Rivers YMCA for trails and walkways connecting hotels to the YMCA.

The funding will come from the hotel tax capital projects fund.

The hotel tax is levied on hotel rooms rented in the county.

Project manager Milissa Bauer said the project will “connect tourists from area hotels and visitors to the Clarion County YMCA via a pedestrian/biking trail and become a part of the public transportation bus route.”

Bauer said the YMCA offers a $5 day pass and is working with hotels in the area to offer day passes to their guests.

The new $12.1 million YMCA on Mayfield Road is a full service facility. The 41,000 square foot building offers a full size pool and fitness center, daycare, outdoor athletic fields and other amenities.

The pedestrian/bicycle route will be constructed along Mayfield Road, Holiday Inn Road and Kane Road. The trail will begin at the main entrance of the YMCA and continue west along Mayfield Road.

The new trail will continue north to Holiday Inn Road and follow Kane Road to the intersection with Route 68. PennDOT has planned a sidewalk in that area.

Bauer said in her grant proposal that the improvements will provide pedestrians and bicyclists with a safe access between the YMCA and the Clarion Mall.
