Veterans treated to picnic

For the 12th consecutive year, Clarion County military veterans were treated to a picnic at Clarion County Park on Saturday afternoon.

“We believe the vets just need a day for camaraderie,” Clarion County Veterans Affairs Director Judy Zerbe said. “We don’t allow any solicitation of any kind. It is just a day for them to come out and enjoy some music and some good food.”

She said the picnic could not happen without volunteers.

“The VFW in Clarion provided the food for the picnic at cost and the staff at the Liberty House have volunteered to serve,” Zerbe said. “We sent out postcards to as many vets as possible and still called some others. Some people actually called me.”

She said food was prepared for 350 people, including the volunteers.

Among the volunteers were those with the Civil Air Patrol in Clarion and the “Outreach Band” from Harrisburg, along with Clarion County employees and a few local politicians.

Clarion County Commissioner Wayne Brosius volunteered to do the public address announcements. “I just want to thank all of the volunteers here today,” he said. “It’s just a great event.”

State Rep. Donna Oberlander said, “The vets have sacrificed so much for us. I am the wife of a Marine, so it is my place to give back.”
