Clarion University to hold workshops for local students

Clarion University’s Educational Talent Search will host a series of workshops to kick off the back-to-school season.

The workshops, which will be held in Ralston Hall, are free to local students in grades 6 through 12, and are offered through a TRIO Talent Search grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The workshop schedule is as follows:

-Monday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.: Registered nurse Sonja Groenendaal will show participants how to take vital signs and learn the warning signs of common health threats. She will discuss healthy eating, staying fit and careers in health care. The workshop will be interactive.

– Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.: Actor and playwright Steve Wilson will show how to create and perform a story. The workshop will be interactive.

– Thursday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.: Redbank Valley biology teacher Deven Laird will lead a hands-on science workshop in which attendees can participate in a number of experiments.

– Friday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.: Upward Bound and Clarion-Limestone teacher David Sloan will show how perception shapes historical perspective.

An application is required due to federal funding and reporting requirements. Pre-registration is required.
