Preparations underway for Mayfest

From staff reports

Changes are in store for this year’s Mayfest events in the Fryburg and Marble area set for Memorial Day weekend, May 24 and 25.

Motor Mayhem

Travis and Julie Crate have taken over leadership of the car show and anticipate a bigger show than previous years. To accommodate the expected larger crowds, the show will now be held on the highway between First United National Bank and Bendal’s Berry Patch on Route 208.

The motorcycle show will be held in the bank parking lot, where a stage area will be set up beside the bank. Entertainment will be provided by Jesse Watson.

The tractor show will be in the field diagonally across the road from the stage area; Touch a Truck will be beside the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department.

A detour for the event’s duration will be available using Fescenmyer Road.

The Little Miss Mayhem and Jr. Greaser contests will take place in the stage area, where children will be dressed in ‘50s, ‘60s or ‘70s attire.

Maybug contest

The Mayfest Maybug contest returns. Participants should look for the “bug boxes” at Montana’s Café, in Marble, and Smith’s Country Store, in Venus, to vote for their favorite Maybug.

Additionally, online voting can be accessed by visiting fryburgmayfest.com or the Facebook site. Winners will be seen in the Mayfest Blast from the Past Parade.

5K Run/Walk

The Mayfest 5K Fun Run/Walk, scheduled for the evening of May 24, will be held in memory of Jake Hoffman, longtime firefighter and chief of the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department who lost his battle against cancer earlier this year.

The department is preparing for its new Quick Response Service (QRS), and the Mayfest committee will donate race proceeds to the cause.

Participants can register online at runsignup.com or submit a paper registration. After the race, a movie night is planned for kids of all ages, with food vendors on the church grounds.

Dino ROAR and other events

The Dino ROAR show returns to follow the theme of Blast from the Past.

In addition, there will be: Adventures in Fun Animal Show, Charlie the Jester, Marty’s Bubble Gum Machine, Jones’ Party Magic’s Inflatable Games and the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance booth.

There also will be a craft and vendor show, and food vendors will be in both the park and in the Motor Mayhem area. Transportation from the parking areas will be provided by Muccio Busing.

St. Michael Church tour

Tours of St. Michael Church will be provided by Terry and Susan Moore. The St. Michael Rosary Society will hold its annual bake and rummage sales in the church hall.

Blast from the Past Parade

The parade will begin at 4 p.m. May 25, with Justin “Goob” Forthsyte acting as grand marshal, a title earned by owning and operating the oldest business in Fryburg, The Washington House.

Karl “The Piano Man” Bailey will perform in the park from 6 to 9 p.m. after the parade. A fireworks display will follow the performance on the hill behind Fryburg Sportsman’s Club.
