Clarion-Limestone holds drive-in graduation ceremony

For the first time in school history, Clarion-Limestone conducted commencement exercises under the stars. The 57 seniors received their diplomas at the Moonlite Drive-In Theater near Brookville Saturday under nearly ideal conditions.

C-L made the decision to go to the nearly 70-year-old drive-in when they learned they would not be able to hold the ceremony in the usual venue at Clarion University due to the restrictions caused by the coronavirus.

The school used the huge movie screen at the drive-in for a split screen. One half would show a still photo of the senior while the other half showed the senior receiving a diploma. The sound was routed through the Moonlite’s FM radio station.

No one needed to get out of the car but many people did anyway. Beach chairs dotted the parking lot and even blankets were spread on the ground.

“This is quite a party!” C-L superintendent Amy Glasl said.

High school principal Mel Aaron, who was the master of ceremonies, seemed to be a bit surprised when he turned around and saw a 40-foot-tall projection of himself on the screen.

Following the customary remarks from valedictorian Ali Girt and salutatorian Samurah Curry, the students were presented their diplomas accompanied not only by the traditional applause but a chorus of honking horns.

“We had a few minor glitches but overall, it went pretty well,” said Moonlite owner Jim Lipuma. “We only have three more graduations to do!”
