Clarion Co. air show takes off today

The sky will come alive today and Saturday as the Clarion County Airport hosts its first air show since 1976.

The two-day event includes ground displays, food vendors and a car cruise.

Success with open houses at the airport encouraged the Clarion County Airport Authority to include an air show, airport manager Donald Kimball said.

Kimball said he hopes the show will create an excitement in general aviation.

It will feature flights of Titan T-51D Mustangs, Dodge C-47A Skytrain and C-123K Thunderpig, as well as stunt shows by Billy and David Werth, Manfred Radius and the Tulsa County Heart Wave.

“It’s our goal that after the show we have a boom of people who want to learn how to fly,” said Kimball.

Pilot hopefuls may learn how to fly and may earn a pilot’s license at the Clarion County Airport. The path to becoming a licensed pilot includes flight training and a written test.

The program offers training in recreational, private, instrument and commercial flight.

Other activities on tap for the weekend include a show by the American Pie band.

A fly-in/drive-in breakfast will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Skydiving demonstrations will also take place both days at the airport as well as plane rides and demonstrations.

“There will be about 15 planes on the ground and a lot of things for people to check out on the ground,” said Dave Cooper, an air show consultant with VIP Services.

Attendees will be able to take tours of several planes and staff will be on hand to answer questions.

“Come early and make sure you’ve got a good spot for the show,” said Don Cumpston, Airport Authority president.

Cumpston recommends taking a chair or a blanket to secure a comfortable spot for the air show.

Gates open at 3 p.m. today and the show begins at 5:30 p.m. The gates will open Saturday at 9 a.m. and the show begins at noon.

Tickets may be purchased online at clarionairport.com or at the gate. Online links to schedule skydiving lessons and plane rides may also be found there.
