RiverStone Center to open season with chamber music program

From staff reports

Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts will open its 2023 season with a chamber music program at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5, in Lincoln Hall in Foxburg. The program will feature world-class artist David Allen Wehr.

Wehr is returning with an ensemble of musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Duquesne University from his acclaimed and sold out “Music on the Bluff” series.

They will perform two piano quintet pieces representing the pinnacle of chamber music repertoire — Franz Schubert’s “The Trout” based on the song of the same name and Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major.

Wehr’s colleagues include Marylene Gingras-Roy, viola (Pittsburgh Symphony); Adam Liu, cello (Pittsburgh Symphony); Aaron White, contrabass (Pittsburgh Symphony); Charles Stegeman, violin (Pittsburgh Opera/Ballet Orchestra); and Rachel Stegeman, violin (Youngstown and Wheeling Symphonies).

Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for ARCA members and $5 for students. Tickets can be bought online at alleghenyriverstone.org or call (724) 659-3153 to reserve and pay with cash or check at the door.

A favorite of Foxburg audiences, Wehr will also serve as the program host and provide insights on the music and the composers. The Piano Quintet in A Major is written for the combination of piano, violin, viola, cello and contrabass.

The fourth movement of Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet – Theme and Variations — is based on Schubert’s song, “Die Forelle” or “The Trout,” which tells the story of a trout’s demise from the vantage point of a sympathetic bystander.

Mezzo soprano Katherine Soroka will perform the song on which it is based in English with Wehr on piano prior to the quintet performance.

Robert Schumann’s “Piano Quintet in A Major” will conclude the program.
