Passers-by keep fire at bay in Parker

Two passers-by likely helped prevent a house from burning down Tuesday in Parker.

A suspected electrical fire started at about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at a home on Doc Walker Road, said Eddie Whyte, the assistant chief with Parker Volunteer Fire Department.

The two men, one an out-of-town construction worker and Rodney Klette of West Monterey, helped keep the fire at bay with a garden hose and fire extinguishers until firefighters made it to the scene.

No one was in the house at the time of the fire except for the family dog, which was saved when the two men opened the front door.

“Without them, the house would have likely burned to the ground,” said Whyte.

Whyte said he thinks a fan left on for the dog ignited the fire.

Damage to the house was contained to the room where the fire started because of the men’s actions, Whyte said.

“Just the one room and some smoke damage,” said Whyte.

Perry Township, Emlenton and Callensburg firefighters also assisted at the scene.

“We were really lucky both men were passing by and that they stopped,” said Whyte.
