North Clarion again wins regional Science Olympiad

The North Clarion Senior High-Junior High Science Olympiad teams became Northwest Regional champions for the third year in a row.

The junior high team earned medals in 22 of the 23 events at the Science Olympiad, held Saturday at PennWest-Clarion.

All members of the team earned at least one medal:

Abbi Bell, first in Disease Detectives and Write It/Do It and second in Road Scholar; Gwen Griebel, first in Experimental Design, second in Can’t Judge a Powder, Optics and Wind Power, and third in Fast Facts and Codebusters; Abby Lauer, first in Disease Detectives and Write It/Do It, second in Anatomy and Physiology, and third in Microbe Mission; Dean Sliker, first in Flight and Wheeled Vehicle and third in Microbe Mission; Kevin Young, first in Flight, Wheeled Vehicle, Experimental Design and Ecology, and second in Dynamic Planet; Liam Bish, first in Air Trajectory and Crime Busters, second in Tower and third in Codebusters; Grace Gilara, first in Meteorology and third in Reach of the Stars; Raelynn Hook, first in Meteorology and third in Reach for the Stars; Owen Walter, first in Crime Busters, second in Tower and Can’t Judge a Powder, and third in Fast Facts; Kinsley Freeman, first in Roller Coaster and second in Road Scholar and Wind Power; Karlie Griebel, first in Roller Coaster and Experimental Design and second in Anatomy and Physiology and Optics; Ethan Hastings, first in Air Trajectory and third in Fossils; Brianna Nicewonger, third in Fossils; and Ryan Pappas, first in Ecology and second in Dynamic Planet.

The high school team earned medals in 17 of the events, and all team members earned at least one medal:

Kaylee Castner, first in Air Trajectory, second in Codebusters and third in Detector Building; Brandon Ochs, first in Air Trajectory, second in Chemistry Lab and third in Detector Building; Wade Peters, first in Fermi Questions, Flight and Scrambler, second in Chemistry Lab and third in Wind Power; Patrick Young, first in Flight and Scrambler, second in Robot Tour and third in Forestry; Emalie Best, first in Forensics and Write It/Do It and second in Experimental Design and Ecology; Gabriel Fair, third in Wind Power; Allison Ochs, first in Forensics and Write It/Do It and second in Astronomy and Ecology; Tytus Troup, second in Astronomy, Experimental Design and Disease Detectives; Julian Bellotti, first in Fermi Questions and second in Robot Tour; Jackson Nicewonger, second in Disease Detectives; Jack Pappas, second in Codebusters and third in Forestry; Julia Brooks, third in Anatomy and Physiology; Myia Hetrick, second in Experimental Design and third in Anatomy and Physiology; and Brileigh Hook, second in Codebusters.

Both teams will now prepare for the state competition at Penn State-Altoona on April 27.

The four junior high teams that qualified to compete at the state competition at Penn State-Altoona are North Clarion, Clarion, North East Middle School and Wattsburg Area Middle School. The two high school teams that qualified to compete at the state competition are North Clarion and Clarion.
