No permits yet, but Horsethief Days set to begin

The permits weren’t “in hand” as of Tuesday, but Knox Borough officials believe Horsethief Days will begin as scheduled Saturday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation must approve any closing of Route 208 for festival activities – something the state wasn’t willing to do in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic – and the Horsethief committee applied for this year’s permits several weeks ago.

Knox Borough Council President Jack Bish said there are plans in place to move Horsethief events off Route 208 if the permits are denied or not issued in time.

Knox Borough Police Chief Nicole Bauer told the council on Aug. 2 that she had contacted PennDOT that day and believed the permits – a separate permit is needed for each day’s activities – should be in place before the festival begins.

Bauer told the council that applications for street-closing permits from throughout the state are now handled by only one person.

“They told me no permit requests have been denied this year,” she said. “I think we’ll be OK.”

Horsethief Days is scheduled to run through Saturday, Aug. 21.

Some of the highlights include softball and whiffle ball tournaments on Saturday and Sunday; cornhole tournament on Tuesday; lawnmower races on Wednesday; Lions Club bike race followed by Power Wheels bike race on Thursday; car show on Friday; and 5K Fun Run, “Jeep Invasion” and fireworks on Saturday.
