New owners of former Wein’s building have a sweet plan

The new owners of the building that had housed the former Wein’s Clothing purchased more than a structure.

Joe and Amy Scarnati, and Max and Lisa Heller also bought the clothes that were left behind when Alan Wein closed the business.

“We are not in the clothing business, so the fixtures and everything else had to go,” said Joe Scarnati, the former state senator from Jefferson County.

Amy Scarnati said the store is full of “a lot” of men’s and women’s clothing that “all has to go” via a sale the owners have planned for today.

“We salvaged a few of the store fixtures, but there are a lot of things we will just sell,” Joe Scarnati said. “Whatever we don’t sell we will donate.”

In a store as old as Wein’s, there was bound to be some vintage clothing. In the front of the store were Arrow collars.

“I don’t think anyone has worn these since the 1920s,” Joe Scarnati said.

In the same case were men’s summer union suits. The one-piece items were guaranteed “not to shrink.”

Amy Scarnati said Dan Smith’s Candies & Gifts, a business she and her husband own, will use the space on the west side of the store.

“We wanted to expand our floor space because we wanted to have ice cream. We have been worked with Brandy Camp Creamery in Elk County,” Amy Scarnati said.

Joe Scarnati said the new Dan Smith’s location will be a “fun store.” Most of their stores have a Victorian theme, but this space will be “light and airy.”

Lisa Heller has been the manager of Dan Smith’s for more than 20 years. She hopes to continue in that role “if they will have me,” she laughed.

“I think you have an in with the new owners,” Amy Scarnati said.

Half of the building will be sublet to The Sugar Tree Boutique.

“They needed a bigger space,” Amy Scarnati said.

The second floor and the basement of the building also will be for rent.

Amy Scarnati said the goal is for Dan’s Smith’s to be moved into the new location in mid-to late August; in time for Autumn Leaf Festival.

“We hope people come in and buy some clothes now and come back for candy later,” Joe Scarnati said.
