Hoping to boost the community’s mood as fall approaches and to make up for the loss of the annual Horsethief events, two Knox-area women are planning the first-ever “Knox Community Spirit Parade.”

The event will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 along Huston Avenue, continue along Petrolia Street to East Main Street to Main Street and end along Darby Road.

“The plan was to get as many people involved as possible, hence the community aspect,” explained co-organizer Brianna Van Tassel.

Van Tassel said she contacted the fall sports teams’ coaches at Keystone School District and provided them with information about the parade.

“I have heard back from a couple of them,” said Van tassel. “The homecoming court is also planning on being in the parade.”

The event is not sponsored or endorsed by the school district.

Van Tassel said she has reached out to local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Heavenly Gaits Therapeutic Riding School and some of those groups have expressed interest in the event.

“Tiki Kahle is contacting the Legion Riders, and has already cleared everything with the Knox Volunteer Fire Department and the Knox Police Department,” said Van Tassel. “They are on board.”

Van Tassel explained, “This is just an event to try to bring the community together, and since we did not have a Horse thief parade.

“The school district cannot be a part of this because of the current restrictions, so I wanted to do this for the community and my classmates.”

Van Tassel said the Knox United Methodist Church has agreed to host a bonfire immediately after for the high school students participating in the parade since the school is unable to.
