Heavenly Gaits to hold volunteer training Saturday

Heavenly Gaits Therapeutic Riding Center will hold a volunteer training session at 2 p.m. Saturday at an arena located at 76 Millerstown Road, Shippenville.

The training is for new and interested volunteers or volunteers that need a refresher.

Heavenly Gaits policies and procedures will be covered along with basic horse knowledge and the various positions available for volunteers.

Instruction will be given on one of the most important jobs in therapy instruction – the side-walker. The side-walker’s main job is to give the rider as much help in maintaining his or her balance on the horse as needed. They support the rider during grooming, riding, mounting and dismounting. They also relay the instructor’s directions using verbal or physical assistance. One or two people may be asked to act as side-walkers for a rider, depending on how much difficulty he or she is having with balance.

Volunteers provide meaningful instructions in horsemanship that accommodates and enhances the quality of life of those challenged by physical, cognitive, emotional and/or social constraints, according to founder and executive director Monique Nellis.

Heavenly Gaits Therapeutic Riding Center, located in Ninevah, is non-profit organization founded in 2014.
