Fox near Knox tests positive for rabies

A red fox tested positive for rabies recently near Knox in Clarion County.

A press release from Joel Brocious, a domestic animal health inspector with the state Department of Agriculture, says a woman was driving a golf cart near Saint Mark Road in Ashland Township when the fox began chasing the cart.

The fox also chased a horse that was in a nearby pasture, Brocious said.

The fox was shot and submitted to the state veterinary laboratory where it tested positive for rabies, Brocious said.

No humans or domestic animals were exposed to the fox, the press release said.

Pennsylvania law requires all dogs and non-feral cats three months of age and older be vaccinated against rabies. Booster vaccinations must be administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity.

Failure to comply with the law may result in a fine of up to $300.
