Forest officers to hold Shop-With-A-Cop event

From staff reports

The Forest County Sheriff’s Office will conduct its fifth annual Shop-With-A-Cop program in December.

copThe event, which will take place Sunday, Dec. 17, joins underprivileged children with law enforcement officials, who help the youths spend donated money toward Christmas gifts.

The nonprofit program provides children with the opportunity to buy gifts for themselves and their families that they could not otherwise afford. The program is designed to help break down barriers between the community and law enforcement.

Participating deputies will pick up the children at a designated location and transport them to Walmart in Clarion, where they will begin their shopping experience. Each child will have an allowance for shopping, and the group will then meet for dinner before returning home.

Last year, the sheriff’s office received more than $12,500 in donations, and that money gave the department the opportunity to help all 81 children who applied for the program.

Each of the 59 families was given a box full of everything they would need for their Christmas meal, in addition to treating the children to a McDonald’s dinner.

As in past years, the children, officers and volunteers will be shopping for gifts such as boots, shoes, coats, jeans and toys.
