Forest Co. commissioners OK primary polling consolidation

Forest County commissioners on Wednesday approved a resolution to consolidate county polling places for the June 2 primary election.

Commissioners conducted their meeting via a conference call.

Voters in Howe, Jenks and Barnett townships will vote at the Marienville Area Civic Association (MACA) Building at 149 MACA Drive in Marienville.

Voters in Tionesta Borough and Harmony, Hickory, Green, Kingsley and Tionesta townships will vote at the Harmony Township Community Building at 95 Center Circle St. in West Hickory.

Commissioners are strongly urging voters in Forest County to vote by mail-in ballot for the primary.

Jean Ann Hitchcock, the county’s elections director, said Wednesday she has received about 325 applications for mail-in ballots.

“It is the most I have ever had. Normally on any given year we have between 50 and 75 requests for absentee ballots,” Hitchcock said.

She added that the county hasn’t had any issues processing the requests.

Voters can request a mail-in ballot at votespa.com or at the county election office. A voter doesn’t need to provide a reason or excuse for a mail-in ballot.

Applications must be turned in by 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 26.

Voters who applied for a mail-in ballot before the election date was changed from April 28 to June 2 don’t need to reapply for another ballot.

The deadline for the county to receive a completed mail-in ballot is 8 p.m. on election day.

Meanwhile, as the county moves into the yellow phase of reopening beginning Friday, not much will change, commissioner Bob Snyder said Wednesday.

Though the date to reopen the courthouse hasn’t been determined, preparations are underway to be ready.

“We are waiting to hear what the governor says on May 8. Then we will make a decision (about reopening the courthouse),” commissioners chairman Mark Kingston said.

Shields are being installed at counters in the courthouse to “keep everyone protected when we are able to reopen,” Kingston said.
