Clarion students to perform play for VDay Project

CLARION – Clarion VDay Project will host a performance of “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and a Prayer” at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, and at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in Hart Chapel, Clarion University.

The production is composed by various authors and compiled by playwright and activist Eve Ensler. It consists of monologues from men and women who have witnessed or experienced domestic violence. The writings presented in the show are designed specifically to promote a stop to violence against females of all ages.

“This is the 16th year Clarion University has done a performance based on playwright Eve Ensler’s work,” said Kathleen McIntyre, Ph.D., professor of history and director of the women and gender studies program.

Co-directors are Aaricka Anderson, a senior sociology major from Philadelphia, and Zachary Hoffman, a junior early childhood and special education major from Butler.

Several other students are involved, include Joseph Lillard of Oil City and Justin Yates of Harrisville.

V-Day, founded by Ensler and for which Clarion VDay Project is named, is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls, according to vday.org.

Clarion VDay Project is a feminist group dedicated to educating students and the community on stopping domestic violence.

Tickets are free for students with ID and $10 per person for public visitors. Parental discretion is strongly advised as “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and a Prayer” is sexually explicit and may contain offensive language.

Proceeds from each performance go to local programs that work toward terminating violence against females. Proceeds from Clarion’s performance support PASSAGES Inc., SAFE and the V-Day Foundation.
