Clarion County projects get $2.2M boost

Several grant awards totaling $2,234,006 were recently announced by state agencies that will fund several projects in Clarion County.

According to news releases, Clarion County was awarded $2 million to rehabilitate Brady Tunnel, a 2,468-foot railroad tunnel on Armstrong Trails, a rails to trails project.

The money comes from the Surface Transportation Block Grant program and will be used to close one of the top trail gaps in the state, with continuing construction to include a steel tunnel liner/drainage system and cast-in-place footings.

Other recently announced grants include:

Sligo Borough was awarded $105,000 through the Surface Transportation Block Grant program to be used in the replacement of the pedestrian bridge over Licking Creek, adjacent to Route 58.

The Clarion County Conservation District was awarded $3,000 through the Department of Environmental Protection’s education grants program to install two interpretive signs at an acid mine drainage passive treatment system at the county park in Paint Township, and to organize three field tours for high school and university teachers, agency partners and the community.

Francis J. Palo Inc., of Clarion, was awarded $30,000 through the Alternative Fuels Incentive Grants program to convert four F-150 pickup trucks to run on compressed natural gas.

The Clarion County Economic Development Corp. was awarded $96,006 through the Industrial Sites Reuse Program to conduct an environmental assessment at a former glass plant in Clarion Township. The state Department of Community and Economic Development announced the approval of the grant.
