Clarion County candidates file nominating petitions

Clarion County voters will have plenty of options in the May 16 primary election as candidates filed nominating petitions on Tuesday for county offices as well as municipal and school board seats.

The three Clarion County commissioners are up for reelection, but one of them, Democrat Ed Heasley, earlier announced he would not seek reelection. Democrats Daniel Carey, of Sligo, and Braxton White, of Shippenville, have filed to run.

On the Republican side, incumbents Ted Tharan and Wayne Brosius are seeking reelection. Also appearing on the GOP ballot will be Brady Feicht, of St. Petersburg, and Kirke Wise, of Strattanville.

No Democrats filed for Clarion County prothonotary, register and recorder, treasurer or district attorney. Democrat Jacqueline Griebel, of Marble, filed for one of the four-year auditor positions.

On the Republican ballot, incumbent Prothonotary Jeff Himes, of Fairmount City; incumbent Treasurer Karyn Montana, of Knox; and incumbent District Attorney Drew Welsh, of Clarion, are seeking reelection.

Incumbent Register and Recorder Greg Mortimer, a Republican, earlier this year announced he would not seek reelection. Republicans will choose between three candidates for the position — Rebekah Weckerly, of Mayport; Misty Ditz, of Fryburg; and Amy Winger, of Knox.

Republican Dawn Reed, of Clarion, and Jolene Frampton, of New Bethlehem, both are seeking a four-year term as county auditor.

Municipal contests

In Clarion Borough, Democrat James Averill has filed for a four-year council term. Republicans Zach Garbarino and Carol Lapinto have also filed for four-year terms.

In East Brady Borough, Democrats Dennis King and Barbara Mortimer have filed for a four-year position on council. Republican Joe Hillwig has filed for a four-year term and Republican Joy McCluskey has filed for a two-year term.

In Foxburg Borough, Democrat Judy Fleming has filed for a four-year seat on council.

Republican Mary Wells is seeking a four-year term on Hawthorn Borough Council.

There are three Democrats seeking a four-year term on Knox Borough Council: Melissa Pierce, Linda Runyan and Brandon Thompson. Republican Jack Bish Jr. is seeking a four-year seat.

Three Republicans are seeking a four-year term on Rimersburg Borough Council: Roger Crick, Pamela Curry and Karina Libecco.

In Shippenville, Democrat Paul Woodburne is seeking a four-year seat on borough council.

In Sligo, Republican Jason Kriebel has filed for a four-year term and Republican Wayne Meier is seeking the two-year term on borough council.

Republican Dennis Logue has filed for a four-year term on borough council in St. Petersburg.

There also are numerous township supervisors positions on the ballot.

School board races

Candidates are permitted to cross-file for school board seats or may run strictly on one party’s ballot.

Allegheny-Clarion Valley (four-year term): Patricia Anderson (R), Richland Township, John Burke (R), Scrubgrass Township.

Clarion Area School District (four-year term): Dave Estadt (D/R), David Lewis (D/R), Todd MacBeth (D/R), Theron Miles (R), Erich Spessard (D/R).

Clarion-Limestone (four-year term): Region I — David Eggleton Sr. (D/R), Christopher Mogus (D/R). Region II — Nathaniel Parker (D/R).

Keystone School District: Region I — Jason McMillen (D/R), Rodney Sherman (D/R), Dustin Swartfager (D/R). Region II — James Beary (D/R), Ken Swartfager (D/R), Eric Weiser (D/R). Region III — Abigail Simcheck (D/R).

North Clarion School District: Region I — Amanda Hepinger (D/R). Region II — Garrett Carulli (D/R), Gretchen McCord Wolbert (R). Region III — Scott Daum (D/R), Kathy Vanish (R).

Redbank Valley School District: Region II — Matthew Burns Confer (D/R), R. John Sayers (R).
