Bell ringers needed in Clarion

CLARION – The sounds of the Salvation Army bells in Clarion may not be heard as much this Christmas season.

“At this time we only have about 10 people who have volunteered to be bell ringers this year,” said Renee Vowinckel, chairwoman of the Salvation Army in Clarion. “We usually have about 60 volunteers for the red kettle campaign.”

The Clarion Salvation Army bell ringers are at only one location – Walmart.

“There are times when the husbands don’t want to shop with their wives and will ring the bell for an hour while they are waiting,” Vowinckel said.

There are no requirements to be a bell ringer.

“Anyone can volunteer,” said Vowinckel. “We have individuals and we have groups volunteer. They can ring the bell for an hour or longer if they choose. A group can take a day and divide it up however they want. We are grateful for any help we can get.”

“Many people are concerned about the virus and I understand that,” said Vowinckel. “All of our bell ringers are outside and masked. We want everyone to be safe.”

The kettle campaign is very important to the Salvation Army.

“This is the only time we get money for the people of Clarion County,” said Vowinckel. “We can help with utilities and other things depending upon the person.”

She noted that donation appeals that are sent through the mail or in print advertisements don’t stay in the county.
