Tionesta event will gauge interest in maker space

From staff reports

A Maker Night event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, in the parking lot of Forest Scientific in Tionesta.

The free event will feature demonstrations of metal working, wood working, jewelry making, sticker design, painting and more.

Guests also will have an opportunity to learn about Forest Scientific, a company that builds CNC machines, laser and plasma cutters, transportable maker labs and other things that are used worldwide in businesses, schools and museums.

Refreshments from Pizza Joe’s will be provided while supplies last.

This event is hosted by the Forest County Business Alliance. The organization is conducting a feasibility study about the potential opening of a maker space in the Tionesta area.

A maker space is a workspace specifically designed for making, learning, exploring and sharing with the goal of providing both shared workspace and equipment for people who make things and lack adequate space or access to equipment to produce or develop new products or work.

This may include artists, product artisans (food, soaps, candles, etc.), woodworkers, musicians and vocalists, technology developers, and many other categories of makers.

The community’s input will help the Forest County Business Alliance determine if there is interest to support such a space, what kind of equipment and supplies it should have, where it would be located, and more.

Surveys and an opportunity for input about the proposed maker space will be collected at the Maker Night event.

Forest Scientific is located at 668 Elm St., in the Tionesta Business Park.
