Suspect captured in fatal Jefferson County shooting

From staff reports

A suspect was taken into custody late Thursday morning in connection with a shooting death in the Summerville area in Clover Township, Jefferson County.

Punxsutawney state police said the male suspect had fatally shot the victim, who reports indicated was a female.

Police said the incident, which occurred earlier in the morning Thursday, has been ruled a homicide.

Police said in a press release they were advised the “single male suspect” possibly shot the victim and fled the scene.

Upon the arrival of police, “the subject returned to the scene and then fled on foot in the local area,” the press release said.

“Assets of Pennsylvania State Police were active, and the subject was located and taken into custody during this immediate investigation,” according to the press release.

Further information from police and other sources, including the identity of the suspect and victim, was unavailable Thursday evening.

The incident resulted in lockdowns of several schools and government buildings Thursday morning in Clarion and Jefferson counties.

Schools on full or modified lockdown were in the Clarion-Limestone, Brookville, Clarion Area and Redbank Valley school districts, according to school officials.

During the lockdown, Clarion-Limestone, on its Facebook page, said “everyone is safe, but we are keeping everyone in the buildings” until state police issues an “all clear.”

The lockdowns were lifted late Thursday morning.
