Special strollers, bikes help children to adapt

Variety, the Children’s Charity, helped to make life better for several area children on Monday.

In conjunction with Riverview Intermediate Unit 6 and Blackburn’s, a supplier of medical equipment, supplies and services, Pittsburgh-area based Variety donated six adaptive strollers to children whose mobility is restricted.

After the morning presentation at the RIU office in Clarion, three additional children were fitted for new adaptive bicycles through Variety’s “My Bike” program.

“The best thing about this program is that the children get to pick out the bike’s color,” Variety Chief Executive Officer Tom Baker said.

In addition to the “My Stroller” and “My Bike” programs, Variety also offers the “My Voice” program, which offers communication devices to eligible children with a communication disorder.

Baker said Variety has presented 140 adaptive bikes, strollers or communication devices worth more than $210,000 to children in Clarion, Forest, Jefferson and Venango counties.

Variety Program Director Deanna Davis said the program “is about these kids finding a sense of community. They have found a place to belong. We provide a way to find that community.”
