Rare bird spotted in Clarion County

Members of the Seneca Rocks Audubon Society and other area birders were surprised by a special traveler spotted in Ninevah in Clarion County. A yellow-headed blackbird fed at a backyard feeder and adjacent cornfield for two days, April 8 and 9, along with a flock of red-winged blackbirds. This species, considered a “rare-irregular visitor during migration in Pennsylvania,” typically resides in marshlands and prairies of the Midwest and western United States and southwestern Canada. This was an extremely rare sighting, said Paulette Colantonio of the Audubon Society, not only for local enthusiasts but for others who journeyed four hours to view the bird. (Photo by Michael Leahy)
