North Clarion students place well at Science Olympiad

Several students at North Clarion High School participated in the Northwest Region Science Olympiad held Wednesday at Penn State Behrend, where they earned first-place medals in many events.

The senior high team earned first place in six of the 23 events. They also won 18 medals overall. This placed them first in the Northwest region and qualified them to participate in a statewide competition to be held Saturday, April 30, in Altoona.

Senior high students took home first-place medals in the following events:

Cell Biology — Katie Bauer and Abbey Barron

Chemistry Lab — Alana Brooks and Katie Bauer

Experimental Design — Nicole Fair, Andy Castner and Kaine McFarland

Forensics — Claire Kriebel and Sofia Venanzi

Ornithology — Patrick Young and Kaine McFarland

Rocks and Minerals — Patrick Young and Aiden Thomas

Second-place medals in the senior high competition where won in the following events:

Environmental Chemistry — Kaine McFarland and Sofia Venanzi

Gravity Vehicle — Patrick Young and Claire Kriebel

Trajectory — Sofia Venanzi and Nicole Fair

Wright Stuff — Patrick Young and Kaleb Wolbert

Detector Building — Kaleb Wolbert and Katie Bauer

These junior high students also qualified to participate in the state Science Olympiad.

Kerianne Mizerak and Ryan Cornecky serve as the coaches/advisers for both junior high and senior high teams.
