Man injured in horse and buggy crash

From staff reports

A Fryburg man driving a horse and buggy was injured in a hit-and-run collision Tuesday evening on Route 157 in Washington Township, Clarion County.

Marienville state police said the crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when the horse and buggy driven by Mahlon Gingerich, 18, was struck from behind by a Ford F150 while both vehicles were headed east on Route 157. The driver of the truck fled the scene without stopping to make contact with Gingerich, police said.

Gingerich lost control of the horse and buggy as the horse began to run wild, police said. He was able to eventually steer the horse into a ditch off the shoulder of the roadway to avoid a head-on collision with oncoming traffic, police said.

Police said Gingerich suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. The horse wasn’t hurt and was taken to a nearby farm, police said.

Washington Township volunteer firefighters and Shippenville-Elk EMS personnel assisted at the scene.
