Inmate dies at SCI Forest prison

From staff reports

An inmate at the SCI Forest state prison died Thursday.

Prison superintendent Derek Oberlander said prison staff responded immediately after Michael Hinkel, 50, was found unresponsive in his cell on Thursday.

Staff members provided life-saving measures until facility medical personnel arrived, Oberlander said. Clarion County EMS also provided advanced life support measures, but Hinkel was pronounced dead at 11:24 p.m. Thursday.

Hinkel was serving a 20-to-40-year sentence for third-degree murder from Allegheny County. He had been at SCI Forest since Dec. 21, 2017.

Pennsylvania State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Forest County coroner’s office.

Hinkel’s next-of-kin has been notified.
