Fire-damaged building razed

It was nearly one year ago when a four-alarm fire destroyed the 140-year-old Hahne Building at the corner of Main Street and Fifth Avenue in Clarion. The effect of that fire continued this week.

The building adjacent to the Hahne building, which also was severely damaged, was being razed.

The fire damage to that building had forced two businesses to relocate. Bob’s Subs opened in a new location on Main Street, and the Clarion Cigar Company moved to Fifth Avenue and opened a coffee bar in addition to its line of cigars and tobacco.

“The building shared a common wall with the Hahne building and suffered a lot of damage,” Clarion Borough Projects coordinator Todd Colosimo said. “That type of construction was common in the late 19th century. It would not pass modern building codes (today).”

Clarion Housing and Zoning Officer Scott Sharrar said the borough did not order the demolition.

“It was voluntary,” he said. “Terra Works (contractor for the demolition) came in and asked for a demolition permit” on the building, which is owned by 507-509 LLC.

“The cost of the repairs were too much,” he said. “There was too much damage to the basement. A lot of water was in the basement and there was damage to the foundation.”

Sharrar said there was no common wall between the building that had been razed and the building next to it.

The demolition was scheduled to be completed Tuesday.

Ron Eustice, owner of the Hahne building, had it razed shortly after the fire because it was a hazard to the community.

“Sadly, now we have two empty lots on Main Street,” Sharrar said.
