Federal funds to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank

From staff reports

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, which serves the tri-county area, will receive $748,675 from nearly $11.4 million of the state’s allocation of federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.

According to a news release from Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, a network of food banks and charitable organizations, the money will finance the purchase of equipment necessary to ensure the high volume of fresh foods and perishable food items can be accessed more readily, stored properly and delivered to families in need.

“The stronger our infrastructure network is, the more effective the food distribution network is, and that means more individuals and families having access to healthy, nutritious meals,” Hunger-Free Pennsylvania Executive Director Sheila Christopher said.

With a portion of the state’s allocation of American Rescue Plan Act funds, the network of food banks will be able to purchase things such as drive-in coolers and freezers, one- and two-door commercial coolers and freezers, sea box containers and several vehicles, the release said.

The majority of materials will go to the food banks’ community partners, including food pantries, food cupboards, soup kitchens and member agencies, the release said.
