The Labor Day weekend traditionally kicks off the election season as candidates begin scouring the hustings for support.
The Nov. 7 general election in Pennsylvania is a grass-roots exercise designed to fill local elective posts from township auditor to school director to county row officer.
As an off-year election, it will allow voters to decide dozens of both paid and non-paid positions on all government levels.
Voters will vote yes or no on retention questions for two Pennsylvania Supreme Court judges. Also on the ballot are candidates for four state Superior Court seats and two Commonwealth Court posts.
There is a ballot question, too. The question asks if the Pennsylvania Constitution should be amended to to allow legislation that would allow an increase in tax exclusions for homestead properties.
What may drive voters to the polls on Nov. 7, though, will be the local races.
In Clarion County, the ballot is topped by the county coroner’s race, open by virtue of incumbent Terry Shaffer opting not to run after 12 years in the job.
Vying for the four-year post are Roland “Rollie” Burns, former coroner who won the Democratic nod with write-in tallies in the spring, and Randall Stom, chief deputy coroner under Shaffer.
A second county row job is also on the ballot. Rex Munsee, a retired state trooper, is seeking re-election to a third term as county sheriff. He won both party nods in the spring and is unopposed.
In the only other multi-municipal slot on the ballot, district judge Duane Quinn of Strattanville is unopposed for a third six-year term. Quinn, whose district includes Clarion Township and Clarion and Strattanville boroughs, won both party nominations.
Elsewhere on the Clarion County ballots, there are races scattered throughout the county’s 22 townships and 12 boroughs.
In the townships, there are supervisor races in Beaver, Madison, Piney, Porter, Redbank, Salem and Toby. Tax collector contests will be decided in Elk, Limestone, Perry and Washington townships.
Sligo Borough voters will decide a mayor race. The Clarion Borough tax collector’s job has two competing candidates. There is a borough council race in New Bethlehem.
Typically, though, there are fewer candidates than there are elective posts. Write-ins in November could fill those slots.
And, there are two municipalities – Knox Township and Brady Township – that have no candidates listed on the ballot for any local position.
