Clarion Career Center students raise $5K for hospital cancer facility

From staff reports

Clarion County Career Center students more than met a challenge to raise $5,000 during Cancer Awareness Month in October as the students brought in $5,097.56.

All funds were donated to the Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital’s “Clarion Sunshine Project.”

Coin containers were placed in the school lobby, allowing students to contribute loose change to the container with the instructors’ pictures on them.

“Coins for a Cure” T-shirts were available for purchase, with proceeds from the sales also being donated. Culinary students sold bagged lunches and donated those proceeds as well.

Also included in the total was a donation from community member Ron Flick, who annually brings his own coin containers.

As the students surpassed the collection goal, welding instructor Jeff Courson received the highest amount in his container.

Student assemblies were held, and a few students from each of the programs were selected to drop water balloons on Courson.

Construction students also created a special nail hat for Courson to wear to ensure the balloons broke.

Cancer Center nurse manager Tracy Myers attended the assemblies and told students how important the funds are to assist patients with their financial burdens.

The extra money allows the patients to concentrate on their treatments instead of worrying about how to cover the costs.

The Career Center has now raised $51,885.87 in the past 12 years during Cancer Awareness Month.
