From staff reports

A man was fatally shot Tuesday morning after he stabbed a Butler city police officer with a knife in the city of Butler.

Butler city police responded at about 7 a.m. to a report of a male acting erratically and jumping in and out of oncoming traffic, according to Butler state police who are investigating the incident.

City police found John Ebberts, 35, of Butler, and a struggle ensued in which an officer was stabbed multiple times by Ebberts, state police said.

The officer then shot Ebberts, causing him to be fatally wounded, state police said.

The injured 27-year-old officer was flown to UPMC Presbyterian where he was reported to be in critical but stable condition, state police said at about 11 a.m.

State police said the officer has been with Butler city police for three years and is a Marine Corps veteran.
