Young Professionals and CUP offer ‘Voting 101’ course

From staff reports

The 2018 midterm election is right around the corner, and local organizations want to help educate voters and increase turnout.

Recognizing low turnout from millennials in particular, the Clarion Area Young Professionals have teamed up with Clarion University and the All in Campus Democracy Challenge to present a non-partisan crash course on voter education: Voting 101.

Voting 101 will cover key frequently asked questions such as how to register, change your registration, find your polling place, and how to obtain an absentee ballot.

Further, the presentation will discuss how voters can look up sample ballots and resources for researching candidates prior to the election. Live demonstrations of online resources will be provided, and after the presentation volunteers will be available to help participants fill out forms and answer specific questions.

Organizers hope to simplify the voting process and provide voters with tools to do their own research and make an informed decision on Nov. 6.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, National Voter Registration Day, at the Suites on Main South in Room 9A/B, Clarion.

The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available behind the Suites on Main South, which is the same building as Starbucks. Signage will direct attendees to the presentation.

Speakers will include Barry Sweet and Kevan Yenerall, political science professors at Clarion University, as well as Tom McConnell and Miranda Spessard from the Clarion Area Young Professionals (an affiliate of the Clarion Area Chamber).
