Students from Clarion and Jefferson counties tested their skills during the Pennsylvania Envirothon at Clear Creek State Park on Wednesday..

The annual event guides students through a natural resource environmental education program that combines classroom learning and outdoor activities.

This exposure to nature and seeing how humans impact the natural world is designed to provide invaluable lessons for understanding ecosystems and the environment.

“This year we had nine teams registered with about 50 students participating,” said Hannah Bequeath, education and outreach coordinator for the Clarion County Conservation District.

Students from Keystone, North Clarion, Redbank Valley and Brockway were among those who participated. Some of the schools had more than one team participating.

The Keystone team, consisting of students Mariah Beary, Josephine Kinsler, Jovia Kinsler, Kylee King and Logan Edmonds, and advisors Pam McCandless and Matt Baker, finished first and will advance to the state finals at Camp Luther in Union County.

North Clarion teams under the direction of advisor Kayla DeLong were second and third.

Bequeath said the students were tested in soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and environmental issues.

“At the state competition, the winning team will compete in the five field testing stations and will have to submit a virtual presentation in response to a scenario based on the current issue, ‘Waste to Resources’,” Bequeath said.

The Envirothon had support from state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the state Game Commission, the Jefferson County Conservation District and the Clarion County Conservation District.
