A full day of activities is planned as the Fertigs Community Center holds it annual Old Home Day celebration on Labor Day.

Things get underway at 11 a.m. Monday with a flag raising ceremony by the Boy Scouts. During the ceremony the national anthem will be sung by the emcee for the day retired pastor Gale Boocks. The ceremony will open the day’s events.

The annual car cruise will be held on the grassy ball field area beginning with free registration at 11 a.m. The cruise-in is open to cars, trucks and motorcycles. A free ice cream cone or soda will be given to each registrant and all those who register will be eligible for the drawing of many door prizes at 2:30 p.m.

A 50/50 raffle will be conducted for defraying cost of operating the center and future improvement projects. Newly designed cruise T-shirts will also be available for purchase.

The kitchen will open at noon with a great variety food ranging from hot sandwiches to ice cream cones.

The Rev. Jimmie Turner of the Fertigs Lighthouse of Praise Church will be the guest speaker at noon.

Music will follow by the popular oldies band from Pittsburgh, American Pie. This versatile group offers a variety of music including songs of ’50s through the ’80s classic hits. Sawyer Stepp and the Crossroads Band will take the stage about 3:30 p.m. for a late afternoon program of classic country, ’50s and oldies rock and roll.

A children’s penny carnival will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. This is a new event this year and promises to be a lot of fun and entertainment for the kids, community center member said.

The very popular Chinese auction will be held throughout the afternoon. It begins at noon and wraps up with the winners’ drawing at 4 p.m.

Ticket sales will end at 3:45 p.m. Handmade crafts, gift baskets, kids’ toys and games, variety of household items, women’s accessories and much more will be offered at the Chinese auction. The winners need not be present for the drawing, but items must be picked up that evening or within three days.

Donations for the auction will be accepted before 4 p.m. Saturday or Sunday.

Tickets will be on sale during the Old Home Day event for the center’s annual pig raffle. The two pig raffle winners will be announced at the Community Center’s fall rotisserie chicken dinner Saturday, Oct. 14. Each winner will receive half of a pig, cut, wrapped and frozen. The meat is donated by the Max and Dawn Stepp family.

The Fertigs Community Center, located at 4887 Camp Coffman Road, one-half mile south of Fertigs, is a non-profit organization, dependent completely on volunteers’ time and efforts.

The center’s ball field has been used throughout the summer by a local church league and the building and/or grounds are available for rental throughout the year.

Improvement projects of the past year have included replacement of the building windows and interior painting. There is also a newly constructed awning over the back serving window of the building.

Upcoming projects call for the replacement of the indoor tables and chairs and reworking of the outside pavilion.

Event organizers encouraged people to “come join the fun on Labor Day at the Fertigs Community Center.”
