North Clarion wins 15 medals at academic competition

North Clarion decathletes received a plaque after winning second place in the small schools division at the regional academic decathlon Feb. 15 and 16 at Edinboro University. North Clarion placed sixth in the small and large schools division and took home 15 individual medals.

Decathletes compete in three divisions: honors, scholastic and varsity. The following North Clarion decathletes won medals.

Trevor Amsler, 12th grade, honors division: gold in math; bronze in speech

Lia Evans, 12th grade, honors division: gold in math; silver in speech

Cole Anderson, ninth grade, scholastic division: gold in music; silver in economics, social science and art; bronze in literature

Avari Schwabenbauer, 12th grade, scholastic division: bronze in math

Josh Gearhart, 12th grade, scholastic division: bronze in interview

Parker Evans, ninth grade, varsity division: bronze in math

Piper Deese, 12th grade, varsity division: gold in math; bronze in essay and speech

Other members of the North Clarion team are junior Diane Albright and freshman Scottie Dunlap.

Schwabenbauer and Deese set new school records at the regional competition. This year’s math test was statistics. Statistics was recently added to the district’s curriculum, which helped decathletes take home five math medals.

North Clarion qualifies for the state competition March 15 and 16 at Carlisle High School in Carlisle.

USAD Nationals are April 25 to 27 in Bloomington, Minn. The 2018-19 curricular theme is The 1960s: A Transformational Decade. North Clarion students have spent the year studying political figures, music and civil issues from that era, among other things.
