Knox man charged with vehicular homicide in crash that killed 2

A 34-year-old Knox man has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the deaths of two people in an August crash in Clarion County.

Nicholas Andrew Colwell is facing two felony counts of homicide by vehicle, a misdemeanor count of DUI and seven summary traffic violations.

Carrie A. Hunt, 54, of Clarion, and Gilbert E. Slaugenhaupt, 73, of Shippenville, were killed in the two-vehicle crash Aug. 22 along Paint Boulevard (Route 66) near Doe Run Road in Paint Township.

The Clarion state police incident report says Colwell, who was headed north in a Chevrolet CK-3500 truck, allegedly crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Mercury operated by Hunt.

Hunt was found deceased when emergency services personnel arrived at the scene.

Slaugenhaupt, who was a passenger in Hunt’s vehicle, was transported to Clarion Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Heather M. Garrett, 43, of Strattanville, a back seat passenger in Hunt’s vehicle, was flown via medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh-area hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Colwell was transported to Clarion Hospital where he was interviewed by police. He allegedly told police he had just left work and believed he fell asleep at the wheel.

The police report did not list what injuries Colwell might have sustained.
