Nearly 100 people turned out for the Jan. 29 “Foxburg Ice Fishing Tournament” held in very cold conditions at Kahle Lake in Salem Township.

Organized by Beth and Chuck Gisselbrecht, the contest paid out $1,135 in prize money and raised another $545 for a summer kiddies fishing day at the lake.

Late registration began at 5 a.m. and anglers took to the ice at 6 a.m. in temperatures right around zero degrees and pulled fish from the water until about 1:30 p.m. when the temperature had risen to about 16 degrees. A slight breeze blowing across the lake made for a very cold day.

In addition to the prize money, the tournament raised $545 as a cash donation for the Emlenton Rod and Gun Club which will host a kiddies fishing day at the Venango County side of Kahle Lake on July 8 as part of the annual Emlenton Summer Festival.

Chuck Gisselbrecht thanked the tournament’s participants, sponsors, and volunteers for making the event a success. It was one of the largest turn-outs for the contest.

Gisselbrecht said the tournament will be held in 2023 before going on hiatus as the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission plans a major repair and renovation of Kahle Lake, which will include draining the water from the reservoir.
