Hotel tax hike in Forest County approved

Forest County commissioners raised the county hotel tax at the panel’s meeting Wednesday.

The commissioners adopted an ordinance that hikes the tax from 3% to 5%.

The levee is used to fund tourism promotion in the county.

In other business Wednesday, commissioners noted that the county received a second round of federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program money totaling $237,468.

The rental assistance program targets individuals and households at risk of homelessness due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The commissioners also approved a request that allows county Veterans Affairs director Eric Cepek to buy flags for veterans graves for 2023.

Commissioners chairman Mark Kingston said Cepek wants to buy flags for next year “before the price goes through the roof. One flag company is shutting down.”

The commissioners said they anticipate opening the new transportation office in Marienville within the next month.

Once the transportation department has moved to its new location, the plan is to tear down the building where the transportation office has been, also in Marienville, to expand the parking lot, commissioner Bob Snyder said.

Snyder also said the EMT class in Forest County will begin in May.

Anyone who wants to take the class is welcome, he added.

Snyder said the county will pay the costs of the class and taking the test one time for any county residents who take the class, pass the test and commit to working at the ambulance service in Forest County for two years.
