Homicide charges filed in double fatal Redbank crash

A 29-year-old Tarentum man has been charged with numerous offenses, including two counts of criminal homicide, stemming from a Sept. 17 crash in Redbank Township.

Douglas Craig, 36, of New Bethlehem, and Sarah Stewart, 34, of Strattanville, died in the crash.

According to a police crash report from the time, Craig was operating a 1999 Honda CBR6004X motorcycle along northbound Route 28 with Stewart as his passenger at 9:03 p.m.

Jhonatan A. Gonzalez De La Cruz, whose address on the original police report was listed as Providence, Rhode Island, was driving a northbound 2013 Toyota Corolla behind a vehicle that was traveling behind Craig’s motorcycle, according to police.

Craig turned left onto Shannondale Road as Gonzalez De La Cruz attempted to pass the vehicle behind Craig’s motorcycle, police said. The area is marked with a double yellow line.

According to police, Gonzalez De La Cruz’s vehicle struck Craig’s motorcycle. Both the car and motorcycle came to uncontrolled stops.

Gonzalez De La Cruz, who had to be extricated from his car, was flown from the scene via medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh-area hospital for treatment of suspected serious injuries, according to police.

Craig and Stewart were thrown from the motorcycle, police said. They were pronounced dead at the scene by Clarion County Coroner Daniel Shingledecker.

In addition to two counts of criminal homicide, Gonzalez De La Cruz is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, a first-degree felony; two counts each of homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault by vehicle, both as third-degree felonies; two counts of recklessly endangering another person, a second-degree misdemeanor; and 11 summary traffic law violations, including driving without insurance.

The charges were filed Dec. 8 by state police at District Judge Jeff Miller’s office in New Bethlehem.

Online court records do not indicate Gonzalez De La Cruz’s bail status. No date was provided for further court action.
