Historical society joins Clarion area chamber

From staff reports

The Clarion Area Chamber of Business and Industry welcomed a new member, Clarion County Historical Society.

The Clarion County Historical Society was established in 1955 and chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1956 as a not-for-profit, tax-exempt, educational institution.

In the early years, their collections were located on the third floor of the Clarion County Courthouse. In 1976, the John A. Ditz property was purchased on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Grant Street. This building was and is known locally as the Sutton-Ditz House and now Sutton-Ditz Museum.

Artifacts and collections illustrating the history of Clarion County, including its people, places, and industries, were donated to the effort. Initially, the library, archives and offices were housed here as well, but in 1999 as space became limited due to the volumes of donations to the society, they were moved to their current location at 17 S. Fifth Ave., directly across the street from the museum.

This facility houses the Ralph J. and Virginia A. Fulton Library & Archives, the Thomas Sutton Store and the society’s administrative offices.

The Sutton-Ditz House Museum has been listed on The National Register of Historic Places since 2004.
