Garden club holds June meeting

Thirty-one members and guests of the Garden Club of Clarion County met June 5, 2018 at DJ’s Greenhouse in Transfer.

The meeting and lunch took place in an outdoor gazebo surrounded by gardens. Before and after the meeting, members and guests talked with DJ and his staff and shopping the wide variety of plants in the greenhouse.

Lee Ann Ishman, garden club president, called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone in attendance.

Vice President, Sue Scmader introduced Nicole Carlin as the guest speaker for the program entitled “Composting-Outside the Box.” Carlin talked about the ease and benefits of composting. She engaged garden club members and guests by making an analogy with “Goldilocks to Gridlock: Just Do It! Eat that cold porridge.” Penn State Extension was cited as an composting resource for home gardeners.

Jan Hartle, co-chairperson of civic development, thanked members for planting a memorial garden on May 19 at the western approach to the Clarion River Bridge on Route 322 and planting a garden of annuals at the Cancer Center at the Clarion Hospital on May 23.

Darlene Hartle, co-chairperson of special projects, asked members to share ideas for wreaths and items for a Chinese auction for the“Make and Take-A-Wreath” program with C & A Trees, scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m Saturday, Nov. 17.

The next meeting will be held July 10, 2018 at the Cricket Song Cafe in Clarion. Teresa Lapinto of C & A Trees will introduce members to new species in the Echinaccea, Black-Eyed Susan and Daylily families.
