Forest to seek grant for bridge replacement

The Forest County commissioners, during their meeting on Wednesday, approved a resolution to apply for a Multimodal Transportation Grant to replace the Mayburg bridge.

The request of $2,912,715 is for the Commonwealth Transportation Authority to replace the bridge.

“We keep applying for grants,” commissioners chairman Mark Kingston said.

The Mayburg bridge — a one-lane, 155-foot, wooden span — links the small village of Mayburg in Howe Township to Route 666 in Kingsley Township.

Mayburg has about 10 families who live there year-round as well as more than 100 hunting camps and seasonal homes.

The bridge was badly deteriorated and had a weight limit of 6 tons. A bridge overlay was installed, which allows the public to safely cross Tionesta Creek and accommodates heavier vehicles.

In 2019, the plan was for the overlay to be in place for two years and potentially be extended for a third year while the county sought funds to replace the bridge.

Commissioner Bob Snyder noted the overlay would last for a long time, but it is resting on three piers in the creek. If one of those piers were to give way, that would jeopardize the bridge.
