Forest County commissioners approved a new hire Thursday at the panel’s regular meeting.

Darian McCanna is the new full time administrative assistant in the transportation department, and the appointment took effect Tuesday.

Commissioners chairman Robert Snyder and commissioner Basil Huffman approved the hire. Norman Wimer wasn’t at the meeting as he was in Harrisburg on other business.

In other action, the commissioners proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the county to raise awareness of the problem in society and to commend foster parents who open their homes to abused and neglected children to provide a safe and nurturing environment.

The commissioners approved a request from the county probation department to purchase prizes for the annual Starfish Carnival at West Forest Elementary School in the amount of $100.

Huffman said the probation department makes a point of getting involved at the schools to help take a proactive approach to preventing drug addiction.

The sheriff’s department was given approval to purchase six clip-on ties and three cuff keys at an estimated cost of $68.37. When asked about the clip-on ties, sheriff Robert Wolfgang explained that law enforcement won’t wear any kind of garment that goes around the neck that can be grabbed by an assailant.

Commissioners will next meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 19, in the law library of the Forest County Courthouse in Tionesta.
