Forest applies for another Mayburg bridge grant

Forest County commissioners on Thursday adopted a resolution to apply for a second grant that would help fund replacement of the Mayburg bridge.

Commissioners chairman Bob Snyder said the commissioners have already applied for another grant but haven’t heard back yet, so they are applying for a second Multimodal Transportation Fund grant from the state.

The Mayburg bridge, a one-lane, 155-foot, wooden span, links the small village of Mayburg in Howe Township to Route 666 in Kingsley Township.

Mayburg has about 10 families that live there year round as well as more than 100 hunting camps and seasonal homes.

The bridge, which is owned by the Forest Service, is badly deteriorated after years of little maintenance and currently has a six-ton weight limit.

The Forest Service has signed a contract to have a temporary bridge laid over the current bridge for two years, during which a more permanent solution is being sought.

The commissioners have been working with Howe and Kingsley townships, the Forest Service and Mayburg residents to find a long-term solution to the bridge problem.

In other business Thursday, the commissioners approved an ordinance that would adjust the way the county uses state funding through the HealthChoices Behavioral Health Program.

The HealthChoices program provides behavioral health services and drug and alcohol abuse services to Forest County and many other counties in Pennsylvania, Ronna Tipton of Forest-Warren Human Services said.

Tipton said the changes would give the county greater control over the funding that had previously been under the direction of the state.

She added that any excess funds could be reinvested into the county.

“It’s all around better,” Tipton said.

Commissioners have scheduled an open house for the county’s new Annex Building from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet with staff members from the county’s Veterans Affairs office and the Penn State Extension office.

The two-story building also houses the public defender’s office and includes a maintenance garage and a storage area for records on the lower level.
