Farmington seeks volunteers for park committee

Farmington Township supervisors are looking for five to seven volunteers to serve on a committee or association to oversee development and operation of the township park.

Supervisors Matt Sherbine, Dave Crise and Chuck Gilbert made the appeal Wednesday at their regular meeting.

The township had a park oversight committee when the park, located between Leeper and Tylersburg was first built about 15 years ago, but that committee faded out due to a lack of volunteers willing to serve on the panel.

As the park has aged and maintenance and development issues have started to arise, the board of supervisors hopes to re-establish a committee or park association.

The difference between a committee and an association is more than semantics.

A committee and an association have different legal statuses as to ownership of the park, the ability to pursue grants and manage funding.

Deciding between being a committee or an association would be one of the first tasks the new group would decide.

Either way, Sherbine said the board of supervisors would remain ultimate say over spending at the park.

As the township secured grants from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources when building the park, the DCNR also retains some say in what improvements and additions are made at the park.

Sherbine said the at least the majority of the committee or association members should be township residents, allowing for seasonal residents to participate in the group.

Sherbine added he would like a member of the Leeper Baseball Association to serve on the board.

Anyone interested in serving on the proposed committee or association should contact the township office at (814) 744-8523 or send an email to farmtwp@verizon.net.
