Fairmount City man injured in hunting accident

From staff reports

A Fairmount City man was shot in his right leg in a hunting accident Dec. 31 in a wooded area along Kemmer Road in Limestone Township, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

The man was identified as Brandon Lee Dunkle, 42.

Pennsylvania game warden Daniel Carl said Dunkle was one of about 10 deer hunters putting on a drive through a wooded area while about 13 other hunters waited for the deer to emerge.

During the drive, a doe stopped in front of a brush pile about 40 yards in front of a Corsica man who fired his .50-caliber flintlock rifle at the deer, the Game Commission said. The ball traveled about 76 yards, hitting Dunkle in the right thigh, according to the Game Commission.

Dunkle was wearing fluorescent orange clothing on his head and chest, the Game Commission said. He was behind the brush pile and wasn’t seen by the man who fired the shot, according to the Game Commission.

Dunkle verbally called out for help, and he used a mobile radio to alert his group he had been struck by the ball.

Two other members of the hunting party approached Dunkle almost immediately, and by using the belts from their pants they applied two tourniquets to Dunkle’s leg.

Other members of the group called 9-1-1 for emergency assistance, and Dunkle was carried up a hill and then transported by a UTV to Kemmer Road where EMS personnel were waiting.

Dunkle was transported to a Pittsburgh-area hospital via medical helicopter.

Carl reported he was able to contact Dunkle via telephone later in the evening and was advised by Dunkle that he was “sewn up without major surgery and was expecting to be released the next day.”

No charges had been filed in the accident as of Thursday.
