Conservancy cleanup yields ton of trash from river

From staff reports

Nineteen volunteers with the Allegheny Valley Conservancy (AVC) participated in a one-day Allegheny River cleanup event on Aug. 24 and collected the most trash of any cleanup event to date, according to an AVC news release.

Volunteers collected about 1 ton of trash from the river in a stretch from Kibbe Island to Henry’s Bend, the release said, including 22 tires, various recreation items, old tractor parts, a commode and other items.

Steve, Patty and Mike English, of Henry’s Blend, co-hosted the event with AVC.

In addition to the volunteers, the event was made possible by a number of commercial and government organization sponsors, the release said.
