Clarion University pulls back on ALF participation

Clarion University will honor its sponsorship commitment to the Autumn Leaf Festival but has canceled several annual events, including its several cultural night activities.

Clarion University communication manager Tina Horner confirmed a newspaper inquiry concerning the cancellation of events such as the cultural night performances and alumni events including the pre-parade gathering near Founders Hall, the homecoming pep rally and the after-game social.

“Our Office of Alumni Engagement is still working out details for homecoming, but it’s true that we will not be having those events,” Horner said in an email exchange. “Events will be done virtually, although we haven’t fully developed the schedule for what those events might be.

“As July progresses, more details will be developed,” Horner said.

Ann Thompson, director of alumni engagement, said, “Our first priority is the safety of our students, employees, alumni and the extended community.

“Our facilities may only be utilized at 50 percent capacity for gatherings, not to exceed 250 guests, while also maintaining all recommended social distancing protocols and providing touchless catering services.”

Thompson said the regulations greatly reduces the ability to host traditional ALF festivities.

“So, unfortunately, we will not be hosting any homecoming events on campus this fall,” said Thompson. “We are disappointed that we will not be able to welcome our alumni and the community for these traditional events, but we believe that the most important thing we can do now is to keep our campus and community safe.”

Tracy Becker, executive director of the Clarion Area Chamber of Business and Industry, the organizing agency for the ALF, said CU’s sponsorship of the festival amounts to about $6,200.

“We learned about the university’s decision late last week,” said Becker. “I understand their concerns and their decision.”
