Clarion legion auxiliary plans wreath effort

From staff reports

The regular monthly meeting of the Craig E. Fleming American Legion Auxiliary Unit 66 was held Monday, Oct. 14.

A report was given concerning the annual Chinese auction fundraiser held by the Auxiliary on ALF Farmers Craft Day. The event was a huge success with over 50 baskets and/or gifts given away to lucky individuals that day. A total of $2,700 was raised and will be used to help troops and veterans.

Several items were discussed and voted on during the meeting. In addition to their annual support of the Wreaths across America campaign through the Wentlings Corners Association, it was voted on and approved to purchase an additional 10 wreaths through the Clarion Cemetery Wreaths across America campaign for the Second Avenue cemetery in Clarion.

This year’s wreath laying ceremony will take place Saturday, Dec. 14. The event is held to remember and honor veterans through the laying of remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes and the act of saying the name of each and every veteran out loud.

Dinners for the organization were discussed during the meeting. The Honor Guard dinner was recently held to recognize the dedication and efforts of the American Legion members. This year’s Veterans Day dinner will be held Nov. 11. Auxiliary members who are willing to help with this event are asked to come at 1 p.m. on Nov. 10 to help set up. Auxiliary members are also encouraged to come at 1 p.m. on Nov. 24 to help decorate the Legion for the Christmas season. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A report was given that for the month, 18,049 coupons were collected, cut, sorted and mailed to military families. These coupons exceeded $39, 704. This ongoing project helps our troops and their families overseas. Participants can drop off coupons any time at the Legion.

The auxiliary meets at 6 p.m. the second Monday of every month. All active auxiliary members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
